Morire? … E chi lo sa qual è la vita! ..
Questa che s‘apre luminosa e schietta
ai fascini, agli amori, alle speranze, …
o quella che in rinunce s‘è assopita? …

È la semplicità timida e queta …
che si tramanda come ammonimento
come un segreto di virtù segreta
perché ognuno raggiunga la sua mèta,

o non piuttosto il vivo balenare
di sogni nuovi sovra sogni stanchi,
e la pace travolta e l‘inesausta
fede d‘avere per desiderare? ..

Ecco … io non lo so…ma voi che siete
all‘altra sponda sulla riva immensa
ove fiorisce il fiore della vita,
son certo lo saprete.

Sterben?

Sterben? Wer weiß denn schon, was Leben ist?
Ist es, was freudvoll sich und unverstellt
den Lockungen, Amouren, Hoffnungen eröffnet,
oder was in Entsagung dämmert vor sich hin?

Ist es das stille, einfache Bescheiden,
das mahnend uns wird überliefert,
wie das Geheimnis der geheimen Tugend,
die jeden an sein Ziel hinführt?

Oder ist es nicht vielmehr das helle Leuchten
neuer Träume über müden Träumen,
die aufgestörte Ruhe, der grenzenlose 
Glaube, was man ersehnen muss?

Nun, ich weiß es nicht. Aber ihr, die ihr 
am anderen Ufer seid, auf unermesslichem Gestade,
dort, wo des Lebens Blume blüht,
ihr, das weiß ich, werdet’s wissen.
