Давно ль желанный мир я звал к себе, тоскуя, 
Любил и проклинал любви святую власть, 
Давно ли из цепей я рвался, негодуя, — 
И цепи порвались, и миновала страсть. 

Любовь — побеждена, — но сердце недовольно. 
О чем оно грустит, чего ему так жаль? 
Ужели с муками душе разстаться больно, 
Ужель так дороги ей слезы и печаль?  

Свобода без любви — угрюмая темница: 
Отдам я все, — и жизнь, и радость, и покой, 
Но только-б вновь любить с безумною тоскою, 
Страдать, как я страдал, и плакать, и томиться!
