Ah! forse il ciglio languido tu chiudi al sonno, Elvira, mentre per te sospira l'afflitto marinar, mentre dolente e pallido la sua barchetta ei guida e il nome tuo confida al lido, all' aura, al mar. Elvira, ah! calma i palpiti d'un mesto cor che geme, desta la morta speme in petto al marinar. Digli: Io veglio, o misero, ed al tuo crudo affanno soltanto eco non fanno le vaste onde del mar; vedi, furtive lagrime spargo al tuo mesto canto, odo il lamento, il pianto del fido marinar!

Vielleicht schließt schon, Elvira, dein Auge süßer Schlummer; indes drückt düst'rer Kummer des Schiffers Herz so schwer. Die Stirn von Gram umzogen, durchgleitet er die Wogen, und deinen holden Namen vertraut er der kühlen Nacht. Elvira, hab' Erbarmen, o lind're seine Schmerzen, dass in des Schiffers Herzen die Hoffnung neu erwacht; sag' ihm: Noch deckt mein Aug' kein Schlummer, o wolle nicht verzagen, dein Ruf, dein leises Klagen tönt nicht dem Meer allein; sieh', eine stille Träne fließt deinem treuen Kummer, ich höre deine Töne, ich kenne deine Pein.
