Längst nicht mehr berühret von meiner Hand hängt die Laute dort an bestäubter Wand. Sinnend denk' ich der Zeit, da der letzte Ton ihren rauschenden Saiten einst entfloh'n. Horch! Ein Klingen über die Saiten zieht, wie wenn Herbstwind klagend den Wald durchirrt. Ach, vom welken Kranze, der sie umschlingt, wieder ein Blatt zur Erde sinkt.

Un souffle passe, une douce voix, comme un vent d'automne au milieu des bois. C'est de sa couronne une feuille, hélas ! qui se détache et tombe en bas !
