Sanfter Schlaf
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Soll man sonder Anstoss ruhen
wenn der Blick des tages flieht,
muß der Kummer in den Schuhen,
die man von den füssen zieht,
vor dem Bette stehen bleiben,
Und so hält es auch mein Sinn:
grillen, die den Schlaf vertreiben,
werf' ich mit den Kleidern hin.

Überflüss'ge nahrungssorgen
hab' ich niemals zu verleih'n;
wer dergleichen denkt zu borgen,
spreche ja ben mir nicht ein.
Tage, die noch kommen sollen,
kränken mich nicht vor der Zeit.
Will der Beutel mit mir schmollen,
die Geduld hebt unsern streit.

Gentle sleep
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
 If one rests without scandal
 when the light of day departs,
 the pain in the shoes
 which one pulls from the feet
 must remain standing by the bed.
 And so stops also my mind:
 thoughts, which drive out sleep,
 I throw away with my clothes.

 I've never bestowed
 excess of worries on food;
 such people who think to borrow,
 I don't say yes to any.
 Days, which are to still come,
 do not bother me in advance.
 If my purse wants to pout,
 patience will remove our dispute.
