Een donkren, stormigen zomernacht -
toen hebt gij de ruste verworven.
Ik heb u zelf naar den grave gebracht -
mijn leven? - met u! was 't gestorven!
 
Een donkeren, stormigen zomernacht -
zoo lei ik u zelf ter ruste -
De tortels kweelden nooit droeviger klacht,
mijn doode, dan toen ik u kuste.
 
Ik droeg u op 't herte, door 't spokerig woud,
ik prangde u zoo vast in mijne armen.
Mijn oog was zoo mat! mijn hert zoo koud!
en vruchtloos wou 'k u verwarmen!
 
En ik heb daar zoolang door de velden gewaard,
de ziele vol wilde gedachten;
De sterren pinkten door 't zuchtend geblaart,
als duivelenoogen, die lachten....
 
En bevende heesters, in somberen rouw,
prevelden doodengebeden -
Maar ik, wat ook schreide de nachtlike dauw,
ik heb niet geweend, maar - geleden!
