In eenen donkeren zomernacht
hebt gij de ruste verworven.
Ik heb u zelf naar het graf gebracht!-
Mijn leven, ach! was gestorven.

In eenen donkeren zomernacht,
lei ik u zelve ter ruste.
De nachtegaal kloeg nooit droever klacht,
mijn Doode, don toen ik u kuste!

Ik droeg U op 't herte, door 't spokering woud,
ik prangde U zoo vast in mijne armen!
Mijn oog was zoo mat en mijn herte zoo koud,
en vruchtloos wou 'k U verwarmen!

En 'k heb daar zoo lang door de velden gewaard,
de ziele vol wilde gedachten . . .
De sterrekens pinkten door 't zuchtend geblaart,
als duivelenoogen, die lachten . . .

En bevende heesters, in somberen rouw,
prevelden doodengebeden!
Maar ik, wat ook schreide de nachtlike douw,
ik heb niet geweend, - maar . . . geleden!

hast ew'ge Ruh' du erworben.
Ich hab' dich selber zu Grab' gebracht!
Mein Leben, ach, war gestorben.

In einer dunkelen Sommernacht
gingest, mein Lieb', du zur Rüste.
Die Nachtigall nimmer trüber klagt'
als da, totes Lieb, ich dich küsste!

Ich trug auf den Armen dich fort durch den Wald
und presst' an mein Herz dich, du Bleiche!
Doch matt war mein Auge, mein Busen war kalt,
und eisig blieb deine Leiche!

Ich irrte noch lang' durch den nächtlichen Hain,
dass wild meine Seele entfachte;
und geisterhaft blitzten die Sterne darein
wie Höllengesindel, das lachte.

Und zitternde Sträucher in grauschwarzem Flor
raunten für Tote die Bitten!
Doch ich, wie auch klagte im Schilfe das Rohr,
hab' nimmer geweint, hab' gelitten!
