Deine mächt'gen, deine kleinen
Wellen grüß ich tausendmal!

  Wie ein Kinderauge blauend,
Hell und klar wie Kindesherz
Fließest du, zum Himmel schauend,
Durch die Dornen, durch den Schmerz.

  Frisches Bächlein, lustig schäumend,
Voller Jubel, voller Scherz,
Sinnig, lieblich fließend, träumend,
Wahre dir das junge Herz!

  Laß die großen Ströme brausen,
Neide nicht die stolze Flut!
In der Wälder grünen Klausen,
O da [horst]¹ sich's gar zu gut!

Bright and lucid like a child's heart,
Gazing toward heaven you flow
Through thorns, through pain.

  Brisk brooklet, merrily foaming,
Full of rejoicing, full of jest,
Thoughtful, flowing beautifully, dreaming,
Keep your young heart thus!

  Let the great rivers roar,
Do not envy the proud torrent!
In the green retreats of the forests,
Oh, it is so very good to dwell there!
