Dig vil jeg bære
Paa mine Sange,
Som Bølgerne bære
Fiskerens Jolle;
Lempelig vugges den
Frem og tilbage,
Og Takten fløjtes,
Af Aaretolle.
 
Og Fiskergutten,
Som ligger ved Roret
Og drømmer vaagen
Om hende, han ved nok,
Han lytter til Sangen
Og synes, at Baaden
For alle hans Tanker
Ikke er bred nok.
 
Jeg lærer ham Tonen.
Naar atter han sidder
Sent paa Stranden
Og Tanke-Garn fletter,
Saa taber jeg Traaden:
Der lyder fra Havet
Sang i de maane --
Lysende Nætter.

Toi, je veux te porter
sur mes chants,
comme les vagues portent
la barque du pêcheur ;
elle se balance doucement,
d'avant en arrière,
et les tolets
sifflent la cadence.

Et le jeune pêcheur,
couché près du gouvernail,
rêve tout éveillé
de celle qu’il connaît bien,
il écoute le chant
et trouve la barque
trop étroite
pour toutes ses pensées.

Je lui apprends la mélodie.
Quand il s'assied de nouveau,
tard, sur la grève,
et tresse son filet de pensées,
alors je perds le fil :
de la mer résonne un chant
dans les nuits
baignées de lune.
