Flower of March, flower of March, Like a banner you stand upon The table to the glory of springtime, Planted upright in full freshness; Your little bells toll quietly In order to entice me out into the broad expanses, But my glances hang Sadly upon the white flakes. Whites flakes, white flakes, If I still saw you drifting outdoors, If I still heard the storm rejoicing, I could remain glad and happy, I would give all of springtime's Joy and abundance if winter would stay; Under [winter's] rough mantle My sweet love blossomed. Sweet love, sweet love, Like the snow you have melted away, Were your delicate sprouts too anxious To sun themselves before the world? For the little songster, pity might well Strew a crumb in winter, But pity only endures up to The appearance of the first flower of March. Flower of March, flower of March, A tomb has closed itself, And from its shrine I see a flower emerging, It is called Forbearance and Renunciation, Like you it blooms with a white shimmer -- Though I must endure springtime, I can never take any joy in it!
