Doch kann ich nicht zurück;
Wer einmal dein ist, Einsamkeit,
Dem bist du Tod und Glück.
 
Die Sehnsucht brennt; von drunten her
Ruft mütterlich die Welt;
Wie ist ihr Ruf von Liebe schwer,
Wie rot von Lust erhellt.
 
Doch wer den ersten Becher trank
Vom Wasser Einsamkeit,
Dem singt kein Vogel mehr zum Dank,
Der geht nicht mehr zu zweit.

El camí és penós. el camí és llarg,
però no puc tornar enrere;
el qui un cop t’ha pertangut, solitud,
per a ell ets mort i benaurança.

El deler abrusa; d’allà baix
crida maternal el món;
com n’està carregat d’amor el seu crit,
i enrogit de voluptat.

Però qui ha begut la primera copa
de l’aigua de la solitud,
ja no li canta cap més ocell en reconeixença,
no camina mai més en parella.
