Wie in der Kinderzeit Schließ ich die Augen und atme schwer, Angst hält mich kauernd im Stuhl gefangen. Aber keine Mutter kommt mehr, Keine gute, scheltende Magd mehr gegangen, Die mich am Arm nimmt und mir die schreckliche Welt Freundlich entzaubert und neu mit Trost erhellt. Lange bleib ich im Finstern kauern, Höre den Wind im Dach und den knisternden Tod in den Mauern, Höre Sand hinter Tapeten rinnen, Höre den Tod mit frierenden Fingern spinnen, Reiße die Augen auf, will ihn sehen und greifen, Sehe ins Leere und höre ihn fern Aus den spöttischen Lippen leise pfeifen, Taste zum Bett -- schliefe, schliefe so gern! Aber Schlaf ist ein scheuer Vogel geworden, Schwer zu fangen, zu halten, doch leicht zu morden; Pfeifend fährt er, die Stimme voll bittrem Hohn, Sausenden Fluges im zerrenden Winde davon.

El rellotge parla temorenc amb la teranyina a la paret, el vent bat a les persianes, les meves vacil·lants espelmes estan plenes de caramells i cremades fins a baix, a la copa ja no hi queda vi, ombres per tots cantons, els llargs dits de les quals s’estenen cap a mi. Com al temps de la meva infantesa tanco els ulls i respiro profundament, la por em fa restar arraulit a la cadira. Però la mare ja no ve, ni cap criada que, tot renyant-me, m’agafi en braços i dolçament trenqui l’encanteri d’aquest espantós món i l’il·lumini amb el seu conhort. Llarga estona resto arraulit en la foscúria, escoltant el vent a la teulada i la mort cruixint als murs. Sento sorra que s’escola darrere els papers pintats, sento com la mort teixeix amb el seus dits glaçats, obro els ulls, la vull veure i agafar-la, miro al buit i la sento xiular al lluny amb els seus llavis burletes, vaig al llit a les palpentes – voldria dormir, de grat dormir! Però la son ha esdevingut un ocell espantadís, difícil d’atrapar, de retenir, però fàcil de matar; se’n va tot xiulant, amb la veu plena d’un agre escarni, d’un vol brunzent en el vent que l’estiregassa.
