Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!
Einsam ist jeder Busch und Stein,
Kein Baum sieht den andern,
Jeder ist allein.

Voll Freunden war mir die Welt,
Als noch mein Leben licht war;
Nun, da der Nebel fällt,
Ist keiner mehr sichtbar.

Wahrlich, keiner ist weise,
Der nicht das Dunkel kennt,
Das unentrinnbar und leise
Von allen ihn trennt.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!
Leben ist Einsamsein.
Kein Mensch kennt den andern,
Jeder ist allein.

Nun der Tag mich müd gemacht,
Soll mein sehnliches Verlangen
Freundlich die gestirnte Nacht
Wie ein müdes Kind empfangen. 

Hände, laßt von allem Tun,
Stirn vergiß du alles Denken,
Alle meine Sinne nun
Wollen sich in Schlummer senken. 

Und die Seele unbewacht
Will in freien Flügen schweben,
Um im Zauberkreis der Nacht
Tief und tausendfach zu leben.

Manchmal, wenn ein Vogel ruft
Oder ein Wind geht in den Zweigen
Oder ein Hund bellt im fernsten Gehöft,
Dann muss ich lange lauschen und schweigen.

Meine Seele flieht zurück,
Bis wo vor tausend vergessenen Jahren
Der Vogel und der wehende Wind
Mir ähnlich und meine Brüder waren.

Meine Seele wird Baum
Und ein Tier und ein Wolkenweben.
Verwandelt und fremd kehrt sie zurück
Und fragt mich. Wie soll ich Antwort geben?

Solang du nach dem Glücke jagst,
Bist du nicht reif zum Glücklichsein
Und wäre alles Liebste dein.

Solang du um Verlornes klagst
Und Ziele hast und rastlos bist,
Weißt du noch nicht, was Friede ist.

Erst wenn du jedem Wunsch entsagst,
Nicht Ziel mehr, noch Begehren kennst,
Das Glück nicht mehr mit Namen nennst,

Dann reicht dir des Geschehens Flut
Nicht mehr ans Herz, und deine Seele ruht.

Trübe ward mir plötzlich der Wein im Becher,
Müde saß ich und mußte zu Boden schauen,
Fühlte mein Herz stillstehn und mein Haar ergrauen.
Lärmend lachten im Saal meine Freunde, die Zecher.

Da im Fenster erschien meiner Jugend Vertrauter,
Glänzender Mond, und schien die Halle zu dehnen,
Blitzte im Kelch und in meinen ausbrechenden Tränen.
Meine Freunde, die Zecher, sangen und jubelten lauter.

Stund um Stunde nun wandre ich und fühle die Winde
Ferner Sommer auf meinen brennenden Wangen,
Summe Lieder, die einst wir als Knaben sangen,
Denke der Heimat und weiß, daß ich nie mehr sie finde.

Die Uhr spricht ängstlich mit dem Spinnweb an der Wand,
Am Laden reißt der Wind,
Meine flackernden Kerzen sind
Ganz vertropft und heruntergebrannt,
Kein Wein im Glase mehr,
Schatten in allen Ecken,
Deren lange Finger sich nach mir strecken.

Wie in der Kinderzeit
Schließ ich die Augen und atme schwer,
Angst hält mich kauernd im Stuhl gefangen.
Aber keine Mutter kommt mehr,
Keine gute, scheltende Magd mehr gegangen,
Die mich am Arm nimmt und mir die schreckliche Welt
Freundlich entzaubert und neu mit Trost erhellt.
Lange bleib ich im Finstern kauern,
Höre den Wind im Dach und den knisternden Tod in den Mauern,

Höre Sand hinter Tapeten rinnen,
Höre den Tod mit frierenden Fingern spinnen,
Reiße die Augen auf, will ihn sehen und greifen,
Sehe ins Leere und höre ihn fern
Aus den spöttischen Lippen leise pfeifen,
Taste zum Bett -- schliefe, schliefe so gern!
Aber Schlaf ist ein scheuer Vogel geworden,
Schwer zu fangen, zu halten, doch leicht zu morden;
Pfeifend fährt er, die Stimme voll bittrem Hohn,
Sausenden Fluges im zerrenden Winde davon.
