O bleek bebloed gelaat, dat in den nacht
Gloeit als een groote, bleeke vlam, - wat macht
Van eind'loos lijden maakt Uw beeld zoo schoon?

Glanzende Liefde in eenen damp van hoon,
Wat zijn uw lippen stil - hoe zonder klacht
Staart ge af van 't kruis - hoe lacht gij soms zoo zacht -
God van Mysterie! Gods bemindste Zoon!

O Vlam van passie in dit koud heelal!
Schoonheid van smarten op deez' donkere aard!
Wonder van liefde, dat geen sterfling weet!

Ai mij! Ik hoor aldoor den droeven val
Der dropp'len bloeds - en tot den morgen staart
