by Karl Isidor Beck (1817 - 1879) and sometimes misattributed to Christian Nikolaus Hugo Staacke

Verbleibst ihm dennoch hold gewogen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Verbleibst ihm dennoch hold gewogen,
mein Herz, das in der Jugend bricht!
Er hat ja nimmer dich belogen,
Du hast ja gern dich selbst betrogen,
Was du gejubelt, weis er nicht.

Dein wonnig Lied, dein scheues Beben,
du hast es ihm ja nie geklagt;
Hast keiner Seele preisgegeben
Dein wundervolles Liebeleben,
Dir's selbst in Räthseln nur gesagt.

Kein Gott hat hin mit dir verbündet,
Doch deine Sendung ist bestellt;
Nie hat die Ahnung ihm verkündet,
Wo deines Lebens Quelle mündet.
Du bleibst ihm fremd in dieser Welt!

Note: according to Lawrence Snyder in German Poetry in Song, Fallen Leaf Press, 1995, Holstein attributes this text to Hugo Staacke. Unless "Hugo Staacke" is found to be a pseudonym of Karl Beck, this is a confirmed misattribution.

  • by Karl Isidor Beck (1817 - 1879), appears in Stille Lieder, first published 1840 [author's text not yet checked against a primary source]
