Graf Eberhard im Bart
Vom Würtemberger Land,
Er kam auf frommer Fahrt
Zu Palästina's Strand.
Daselbst er einsmals ritt
Durch einen frischen Wald;
Ein grünes Reis er schnitt
Von einem Weißdorn bald.
Er steckt' es mit Bedacht
Auf seinen Eisenhut;
Er trug es in der Schlacht
Und über Meeres Flut.
Und als er war daheim,
Er's in die Erde steckt,
Wobald manch neuen Keim
Der neue Frühling weckt.
Der Graf, getreu und gut,
Besucht' es jedes Jahr,
Erfreute dran den Mut,
Wie es gewachsen war.
Der Herr war alt und laß,
das Reislein war ein Baum,
Darunter oftmals saß
Der Greis im tiefsten Traum.
Die Wölbung, hoch und breit,
Mit sanftem Rauschen mahnt
Ihn an die alte Zeit
Und an das ferne Land!

Il Conte Eberardo dalla Barba
della Contea del Wurttenberg,
venne in devoto viaggio
alle spiagge di Palestina.
Qui cavalcò una volta
per un bosco ameno;
e tagliò un ramo verde
da un biancospino.
Se lo attaccò con attenzione
all'elmo,
lo portò in battaglia
e sulle onde del mare.
E quando tornò a casa,
lo piantò nella terra,
dove presto nuovi germogli
destò la primavera.
Il Conte, fedele e buono,
andava a guardare ogni anno,
e se ne rallegrava,
come la pianta cresceva.
Il Signore era vecchio e stanco,
il rametto era diventato un albero,
sotto il quale spesso sedeva
il vecchio in sogni profondi.
La chioma dell'albero, alta e grande,
con dolce stormire gli ricorda
il tempo antico
e il paese lontano!
