Graf Eberhard im Bart
Vom Würtemberger Land,
Er kam auf frommer Fahrt
Zu Palästina's Strand.
Daselbst er einsmals ritt
Durch einen frischen Wald;
Ein grünes Reis er schnitt
Von einem Weißdorn bald.
Er steckt' es mit Bedacht
Auf seinen Eisenhut;
Er trug es in der Schlacht
Und über Meeres Flut.
Und als er war daheim,
Er's in die Erde steckt,
Wobald manch neuen Keim
Der neue Frühling weckt.
Der Graf, getreu und gut,
Besucht' es jedes Jahr,
Erfreute dran den Mut,
Wie es gewachsen war.
Der Herr war alt und laß,
das Reislein war ein Baum,
Darunter oftmals saß
Der Greis im tiefsten Traum.
Die Wölbung, hoch und breit,
Mit sanftem Rauschen mahnt
Ihn an die alte Zeit
Und an das ferne Land!

L'aubépine du comte Eberhard

Le comte Eberhard à la Barbe,
Du pays de Wurtemberg,
S'en allait en un saint voyage
Aux plages de Palestine.
Alors qu'un jour il chevauchait
À travers une fraîche forêt,
Il coupa une verte brindille
D'aubépine.
Il la plaça avec précaution
Sur son heaume de fer ;
Il la portait au combat
Et sur les flots de la mer.
Et quand il fut de retour chez lui
Il la planta en terre,
Où bientôt maintes nouvelles pousses
S'éveillèrent au printemps.
Le comte, fidèle et bon,
Lui rendait visite chaque année
Et se réjouissait de la vigueur
Avec laquelle elle poussait.
Quand le seigneur fut vieux et las,
La petite brindille était devenue un arbre,
Sous lequel souvent s'asseyait
Le vieillard, plongé dans ses rêves.
La voute feuillue, haute et large,
Lui rappelle d'un doux murmure
L 'ancien temps
Et le lointain pays !
