Mein Leben wälzt sich murrend fort;
Es steigt und fällt in krausen Wogen,
Hier bäumt es sich, jagt nieder dort,
In wilden Zügen, hohen Bogen.

Das stille Thal, das grüne Feld
Durchrauscht es nun mit leisem Beben,
Sich Ruh ersehnend, ruhige Welt,
Ergötzt es sich am ruhigen Leben.

Doch nimmer findend, was es sucht,
Und immer sehnend, tost es weiter,
Unmuthig rollt's auf steter Flucht,
Wird nimmer froh, wird nimmer heiter.

De stroom

Mijn leven rolt maar morrend voort,
Het stijgt en daalt, kriskras bewogen,
Schiet nu omhoog, dan onderdoor,
Met wilde rukken, hoge bogen.

Het stille dal, het groene veld
Doorstroomt het nu, met licht'lijk beven;
Naar rust verlangend, ongekweld,
Geniet het van het kalme leven.

Doch nimmer vindend wat het zoekt,
En altijd hunk'rend, raast het verder,
Terwijl het boos zijn vlucht vervloekt,
Wordt nimmer blij, wordt nimmer helder.
