Aus tiefem Traum war ich erwacht,
Aus einem Traume lichtumflossen;
O, sei gesegnet, Winternacht,
Die mir das Paradies erschlossen!
Am Fenster blüht' ein Gartenland,
In dem bekannte Weisen klangen;
Die Wiese licht in Blumen stand,
Und tausend Sommervögel sangen.
Ein Bächlein rauschte leise hin,
Es ging sein Weg durch traute Hecken;
Das lief mit frohem Kindersinn,
Im nahem Wald sich zu verstecken.
Ein Pärchen saß am Waldessaum,
In Liebeswonne still verloren.
Genug; es steht mein ganzer Traum
Dort an den Scheiben fest gefroren.

Winter morning

I had wakened from a deep dream,
From a dream suffused with light;
Oh, be blessed, winter night
That opened Paradise for me!
Upon the window a garden landscape bloomed,
In which well-known melodies were sounding;
The meadow was brightly abloom,
And a thousand summer birds sang.
A brooklet quietly rushed by,
Wending its way through familiar hedges;
With a joyful childlike spirit,
It ran to hide itself in the nearby wood.
A pair of lovers sat at the edge of wood,
Quietly lost in the bliss of love.
Enough; my entire dream is there,
Frozen fast to the windowpane.
