Die Marketenderin
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Er spricht ihr von Ehre und heirath sie nicht;

The canteen girl
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
A maiden has fallen in love with a cadet;
He speaks to her of honour, but does not wed her.
When the cadet swings the flag
Her heart swells with joy.
When the drummer beats the drum
It means: Soldiers, you must march into the battlefield!
Sometimes we have no money, sometimes we have no bread,
Oh you wondrously lovely maiden, you must suffer great hardship!
Sometimes we have no bread, sometimes we have no money,
Oh you wondrously lovely maiden, that's how it goes in the battlefield!
And when the enemy comes and kills us off,
You stay with the army and remain nice and pious.
