Es weht durch hellschimmernde Wipfel der Frühling
und küsset die Knospen, die harrenden, frei.
Der Morgen ist duftig, es rauschen die Winde,
es schmettern die Vögel: Feinsliebchen herbei, herbei!
Wer froh ist im glücklichen Morgen des Lebens,
ist doppelt beglücket im goldenen Mai.
Es jubelt das Herz ihm, er singt mit den Vögeln
des Waldes die Botschaft: Feinsliebchen herbei, herbei!
Wem dann aber traurige Wehmut die Seele
erfüllt mit Gedenken viel bösen Geschicks,
dem wecken die Lenze im Jubel der Welten
die Schatten des alten verlorenen Glücks.
Dann lässt ihn das Rauschen, das Duften der Blüten
in Träume versenken das irdische Leid.
So finden sie alle, die jubeln, die trauern,
sie finden im Lenze die seligste Zeit.

Spring blows through the brightly shining tree tops
and kisses the waiting buds open.
The morning is full of scent, the wind murmurs,
the birds sing out: darling come here, come here!
Anyone who is joyful in the happy morning of life
is made doubly happy in golden May.
His heart rejoices, he sings with the birds
of the wood the same message: darling come here, come here!
If, though, anyone suffers unhappiness as his soul
is filled with memories of cruel fate,
in his case, as the world rejoices spring will wake up
the shadows of old, lost happiness.
So let the sounds of spring and the scent of blossom
drown earthly suffering in dreams.
And so all those who rejoice and who are sad
will find in spring the most blissful of times.
