Saa lagde jeg ud, da Stormen faldt
Og Vinden fik Blund over Øjet.
Det var, som ude fra Dybet blev kaldt,
Og jeg lyttede foroverbøjet.
Hult gik Søen, af Tværfurer krus't,
Bølgen var brudt i Stykker;
Hvor Skummet før havde sydet og brust,
Laa Himlen i tavlede Smykker.
I hver en Smaadal, bag hver en Høj,
Smiled en tindrende Stjerne;
Og Landvinden løfted sin Vinge og fløj
Vildt mod det lysende Fjerne.
Jeg lytted og spejded fra Baadens Stavn.
Hvert Blink var et Blik, som mig nævned
Med trofast, inderlig Ømhed ved Navn --
Over Havet stille jeg stævned.

Je prris le large

Comme la tempête tombait, je pris le large,
Le vent ferma ses yeux et s’assoupit.
C'était comme si, venu des profondeurs, un appel retentissait,
et j'écoutais, penché en avant.
La mer grondait sourdement, sillonnée de rides croisées,
Une vague s'était brisée en morceaux ;
Là où l'écume, auparavant, avait bouillonné et jailli,
Le ciel reposait en une mosaïque de joyaux.
Dans chaque petite vallée, derrière chaque colline,
Souriait une étoile étincelante ;
Et le vent de terre déploya son aile et s'envola,
Fougueusement, vers le lointain lumineux.
J'écoutais et observais depuis l'avant de la barque.
Chaque éclat était un regard qui m'appelait
par mon nom, avec une tendresse fidèle et intime ...
Sur la mer apaisée, je poursuivais ma route.
