Fu la sua vision
qual dolce sorriso
che più lieta fa,
col suo brillar, la nostra gioventù.

Ma fu molto breve in me
la dolcezza di quel ben... 
svanì quell bel sogno d'or
lasciando in me il dolor.

Cupo è l'avvenir,
sempre più tristi i dì... 
la gioventù passata sarà 
rimpianto mi resta sol, sì ...

Rimpianto amaro e duol' nel cuor!
Oh raggio di sole,
Sul mio cammino ahimè, non brilli più.
Mai più, mai più!

Wie ein goldener Traum
ins Herz gegossen
ist noch die Erinnerung an jene Liebe,
die erloschen ist.

Es war ihr Anblick,
welch süßes Lächeln,
das mit seinem Strahlen
die Tage unserer Jugend heiterer machte.

Aber sie verblieb mir sehr kurze Zeit,
die Süße, die sich gewiss auflöste
in diesen schönen goldenen Traum,
und den Schmerz in mir zurückließ.

Düster ist die Zukunft, immer trauriger
wird die verflossene Jugendzeit
zur Wehmut,
die einzig mir verbleibt,

Welch bitterer Schmerz, welch Kummer im Herzen!
O Strahl der Sonne,
nicht länger erleuchtest du meinen Weg,
nimmermehr, niemals mehr.
