Mit seinen Leun und Drachen;
Nur eine Wasserrose bleich

Und, horch! wie schlägt so frisch und laut
Ein Vöglein von der Zinne!
Wohl ihm auch ward noch Nichts vertraut
Von längst entschwundner Minne;
Nichts ahnt es von der alten Zeit,
Der alten Pracht und Herrlichkeit.
Nur eine hohe Fichte rauscht
Im Garten voller Trauer;
Sieh, wie sie bebt und wie sie lauscht,
Durchweht von Todesschauer:
Sie einzig sah die alte Zeit,
Die alte Pracht und Herrlichkeit.

Stands desolate in the pond;
Only a pale water-lily
Attempts to smile into the horror:
It no longer saw the olden times,
The old splendour and glory.
And hark! how briskly and loudly
A birdlet calls from the parapet!
To it, too, nothing must have been confided
Of long-vanished love;
It knows nothing of the olden times,
Of the old splendour and glory.
Only a tall spruce tree soughs
In the garden, full of mourning;
Lo, how it trembles and how it listens,
Suffused with shudders of death:
It alone saw the olden times,
The old splendour and glory.
