Nachtgebet

Es rauschte leise in den Bäumen,
Ich hörte nur der Ströme Lauf,
Und Berg und Gründe, wie aus Träumen,
Sie sahn so fremd zu mir herauf.
 
Drin aber in der stillen Halle
Ruht' Sang und Plaudern müde aus,
Es schliefen meine Lieben alle,
Kaum wieder kannt ich nun mein Haus.
 
Mir war's, als lägen sie zur Stunde
Gestorben, bleich im Mondenschein,
Und schauernd in der weiten Runde
Fühlt ich auf einmal mich allein.
 
So blickt in Meeres öden Reichen
Ein Schiffer einsam himmelan -
O Herr, wenn einst die Ufer weichen,
Sei gnädig du dem Steuermann!
