Der bescheidne Schäfer
Language: German (Deutsch)
Mein Schäfer Hylas ist bescheiden!
Er liebt mich, zärtlich liebt er mich!
Der Inbegriff von seinen Freuden,
Sagt er mir öfters, sey nur ich;
Doch ach! – er bleibet stets bescheiden.
Jüngst ließ die Mutter uns alleine;
Was meint ihr wohl, ist da geschehn?
Er stand erstarrt gleich einem Steine,
Gukt’ in den Hut, und wollte gehen,
Und ach! – wir waren ganz alleine!

The diffident shepherd
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
My shepherd, Hylas, is diffident!
He loves me, loves me tenderly!
I am, he often tells me, the sole
Embodiment of all his joys;
But ah! he ever remains diffident.
Recently my mother left us alone:
What do you think happened then?
He stood there as rigid as a stone,
Gazing into his hat and wanting to leave;
And ah! -- we were all alone!
