Bleibe, Abend will es werden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Bleibe, Abend will es werden,
Und der Tag hat sich geneigt;
Bleibe, Herr, bei uns auf Erden,
Bis die letzte Klage schweigt.
Wer soll uns uns're Thränen stillen,
Wenn es Deine Hand nicht thut;
Wer des Herzens Zug erfüllen,
Wenn nicht Deine Liebesgluth?
Ach, so falsch ist ja die Erde,
Ach, so schwankend ist das Herz:
Von der Erde voll Beschwerde,
Führe du uns himmelwärts!
Bleibe, Abend will es werden,
Und der Tag neigt sich zur Ruh;
Bleibe, Herr, uns hier auf Erden,
Uns im Himmel bleibe du!

Abide, it tends toward eventide
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Abide, it tends toward eventide,
And the day has drawn to a close;
Abide, Lord, with us upon earth
Until the last lament falls silent.
Who shall stop our tears
If Thy hand does not;
Who fulfill the inclination of our hearts
If not the glow of Thy love?
Ah, the world is so false,
Ah, so fickle is the heart:
From the burdensome earth
Lead Thou us heavenward!
Abide, it tends toward eventide,
And the day is inclining toward rest;
Abide with us here upon earth, Lord,
Abide in Heaven [to await] us!
