Zwei Röslein, zwei Schwestern, 
Die blühen mir zur Zeit, 
Das eine heißt Gestern 
Das andere heißt Heut. 

Sie wachsen all' beide 
Am selben Dornenreis, 
Zu Lust und zu Leide, 
Eins roth, das and're weiß. 

Das dritt' unter Decken 
Am Reis noch schlummert still, 
Mein Gott wird es wecken, 
Wohl wie und wann er will. 

Welkt Heut auch und Gestern, 
Das dritte blüht allzeit, 
Die dritte der Schwestern, 
Das ist die Ewigkeit.

The roses

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

Two little roses, two sisters,
They bloom for me at this time,
The one is called Yesterday,
The other is called Today.

They grow, both of them,
Upon the same thorny twig,
For joy and for sorrow,
One red, the other white.

The third, under covers,
Still slumbers quietly upon the twig,
My God shall waken it
How and when He wills.

Though Today and Yesterday fade,
The third blooms always,
The third of the sisters:
That is Eternity.
