Meister Oluf, der Schmied auf Helgoland, Verläßt den Amboß um Mitternacht. Es heulet der Wind am Meeresstrand, Da pocht es an seiner Türe mit Macht: "Heraus, heraus, beschlag' mir mein Roß, Ich muß noch weit, und der der Tag ist nah!" Meister Oluf öffnet der Türe Schloß, Und ein stattlicher Reiter steht vor ihm da. Schwarz ist sein Panzer, sein Helm und Schild; An der Hüfte hängt ihm ein breites Schwert. Sein Rappe schüttelt die Mähne gar wild Und stampft mit Ungeduld die Erd'! "Woher so spät? Wohin so schnell?" "In Norderney kehrt' ich gestern ein. Mein Pferd ist rasch, die Nacht is hell, Vor der Sonne muß ich in Norwegen sein!" "Hättet Ihr Flügel, so glaubt' ich's gern!" "Mein Rappe, der läuft wohl mit dem Wind. Doch bleichet schon da und dort ein Stern, Drum her mit dem Eisen und mach' geschwind!" Meister Oluf nimmt das Eisen zur Hand, Es ist zu klein, da dehnt es sich aus. Und wie es wächst um des Hufes Rand, Da ergreifen den Meister Bang' und Graus. Der Reiter sitzt auf, es klirrt sein Schwert: "Nun, Meister Oluf, gute Nacht! Wohl hast du beschlagen Odin's Pferd'; Ich eile hinüber zur blutigen Schlacht." Der Rappe schießt fort über Land und Meer, Um Odin's Haupt erglänzet ein Licht. Zwölf Adler fliegen hinter ihm her; Sie fliegen schnell, und erreichen ihn nicht.

El mestre Oluf, el ferrador de Helgoland, deixa l’enclusa a mitjanit. El vent udola a la platja, aleshores, truquen amb força a la porta: “Sortiu, sortiu, ferreu-me el meu cavall, me’n haig d’anar lluny i aviat es farà de dia!” El mestre Oluf obre el pany de la porta i es troba al davant un gallard cavaller. Negra és la seva armadura, l’elm i l’escut; a la seva cintura penja una gran espasa. El seu cavall negre sacseja feréstec la crina i piafa impacient el terra! “D’on veniu tan tard? On aneu amb tanta pressa?” “Ahir era a Norderney. El meu cavall és veloç, la nit és clara, abans que surti el sol, haig de ser a Noruega!” “Si tinguéssiu ales, us podria creure!” “El meu cavall negre corre com el vent, però aquí i allà ja empal·lideix una estrella, per això, vinga amb la ferradura i fes-ho de pressa!” El mestre Oluf agafa la ferradura amb la mà, és massa petita, però ella s’eixampla. I al veure com s’ajusta a la peülla, al mestre li agafa espant i terror. El cavaller munta a la sella, dringa la seva espasa: “Ara, mestre Oluf, bona nit! Has ferrat molt bé el cavall d’Odin; m’apresso vers la sagnant batalla.” El cavall negre surt com una fletxa damunt terra i mar, al cap d’Odin hi brilla una llum. Dotze àguiles volen al seu darrere; volen de pressa, però no el poden atènyer.
