Ständchen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Es ist mir heut ein kleines Lied
Aus zarter Worte Zier
Entschlüpft, und das Singvögelein
Bring ich im Mondschein dir.

Dein liebes Fenster stehet auf
Und auf wohl auch dein Traum.
Der leis bewegte Vorhang fließt
Von hellem Silberschaum.

Ich wieg noch mal mein holdes Spiel
Wie hoch es fliegen soll.
So wächst die hohe Sommernacht
So hoch von Wundern voll.

Dem Flieder wird der Duft zu schwer,
Die Nachtigall kommt darin.
Da hält mein Herz sein kleines Lied . . .
Weißt doch, das ich es bin.

Confirmed with Hans Heinrich Ehrler, Gedichte, Stuttgart: Verlag Strecker und Schröder, 1919, pages 16-17.

Serenade
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Today a little song
Made of a delicate adornment of words
Slipped out of me, and I shall bring
The little songbird to you in the moonlight.

Your dear window is open
And your dream is likely also open.
The gently moving curtain flows
[As if] with bright silver foam.

Once more I weigh my lovely plaything
To see how high it must fly.
Thus the lofty summer night
Fills to the top with wonders.

The scent grows too heavy for the lilac,
The nightingale flies into it.
Then my heart holds on to its little song . . .
For you know that it is I.
