Am Strome
Language: German (Deutsch)
O flösse so mein Leben hin
Wie deine Wellen, schöner Strom!
Mit Sonn' und Sternen spiegelt drin
Sich früh und spät des Himmels Dom.
Am Morgen, wie am Abend,
Als gäb' es keine Nacht,
Rinnst weiter du, mich labend
Mit deiner blauen Pracht.
Und trüben deine Fluthen sich,
Nicht minder froh wallst du dahin;
Ja singest doppelt freudiglich
Dein Lied mit ungestörtem Sinn.
So strömst du viel' Jahrtausend,
Als wäre Nichts geschehn;
Wirst strömen, wie auch brausend
Noch einst die Stürme wehn!
O flösse so mein Leben hin
Wie deine Wellen, schöner Strom!
Und blieb' ich froh in meinem Sinn,
Ob trüb, ob klar des Himmels Dom!
Wie freudig eilst du weiter
Zum Meere sonder Leid:
O zög' auch ich so heiter
Zum Meer der Ewigkeit!

At the river
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Oh, would my life flow onward
As your waves do, beautiful river!
Early and late the vault of heaven, with its
Sun and stars, is reflected in you.
In the morning as in the evening,
As if there were no night,
You flow on, refreshing me
With your blue splendour.
And if your waters grow turbid,
You do not flow onward any less happily;
Yes, doubly joyfully you sing
Your song with untroubled spirit.
Thus you have flowed many thousands of years
As if nothing had happened;
You shall flow, no matter how the storms
Might yet roar someday!
Oh, would my life flow onward
As your waves do, beautiful river!
And would I remain happy in my spirit
Whether the vault of heaven [were] clouded or clear!
How joyfully you hurry onward
To the ocean without pain:
Oh, would I also travel so cheerfully
To the ocean of eternity!
