Trübe ward mir plötzlich der Wein im Becher,
Müde saß ich und mußte zu Boden schauen,
Fühlte mein Herz stillstehn und mein Haar ergrauen.
Lärmend lachten im Saal meine Freunde, die Zecher.

Da im Fenster erschien meiner Jugend Vertrauter,
Glänzender Mond, und schien die Halle zu dehnen,
Blitzte im Kelch und in meinen ausbrechenden Tränen.
Meine Freunde, die Zecher, sangen und jubelten lauter.

Stund um Stunde nun wandre ich und fühle die Winde
Ferner Sommer auf meinen brennenden Wangen,
Summe Lieder, die einst wir als Knaben sangen,
Denke der Heimat und weiß, daß ich nie mehr sie finde.

De sobte el vi a la copa em semblà tèrbol,
vaig seure abatut i vaig haver de mirar a terra,
vaig sentir que el meu cor s’aturava i els cabells encanudien.
A la sala, reien sorollosament els meus amics, els bevedors.

Llavors, a la finestra, aparegué la confident de la meva joventut,
la lluna resplendent, i la sala semblà engrandir-se,
centellejà a la meva copa i a les meves llàgrimes que vessaven.
Els meus amics, els bevedors, cantaven i reien encara més fort.

Ara, camino hores i hores i sento el vent
d’estius llunyans a les meves galtes que cremen,
cantussejo cançons de quan érem infants,
penso en el meu país i sé que mai més hi tornaré.
