Mit schattigem Kastanienwalde
Senkt sich vom Apennin die Schlucht;
Oliven schmücken vorn die Halde,
Limonen reifen an der Bucht;
Ein dunkles Kloster ragt zur Seite
Des Wegs, verhüllt mit Blüthenschnee --
Vor uns in ungemess'ner Weite,
Ein glatter Spiegel, ruht die See.
Es stört die Welt mit keiner Kunde
Dies reizende Begrabensein;
Wir zählen weder Tag noch Stunde,
Und wie im Traum nur fällt mir ein,
Daß über'm Berg dort mit den Pinien
Die Heimath liegt, an der ich hing,
Eh' ich im Frieden dieser Vignen
In deinem Arm verloren ging.

With its shadowy forest of chestnuts
The chasm descends from the Apennines;
Olive trees adorn the front of the acclivity,
Limes ripen at the bay;
A dark monastery looms alongside
The road, shrouded by blossom-snow --
In front of us in an unmeasurable expanse
The sea rests, a smooth mirror.
With nary a tiding does the world disturb
This delightful submergement;
We count neither days nor hours,
And, only as if in a dream, I recall
That over yonder mountain with the pine trees
Lies my homeland, of which I was fond,
Until in the peace of these grapevines
I lost myself in your arms.
