Er zog mit ihr wohl durch die Welt, Sie lebten in Saus und Braus; Der Mönch verübte Spiel und Trug, Ging endlich auf den Raub. Gunhilde ach, du armes Weib, Gunhild, was fängst du an? Sie steht allein im fremden Land, Am Galgen hängt ihr Mann. Sie weinet rot die Äugelein: O weh, was ich getan! Ich will nach Haus und Buße tun, Der Sünden Straf empfahn. Sie bettelte sich durch das Land, Almosen sie da nahm, Bis sie zum Rheine in den Wald, Wohl vor das Kloster kam. Sie pochet an das Klostertor, Das Tor wird aufgetan; Sie geht wohl vor die Äbtin stehn Und fängt zu weinen an. Hier nehmet das verlorne Kind, O Mutter, das entrann, Und laßt es harte Buße tun In schwerem Kirchenbann. Gunhilde, sprich, was willst du hier? Laß solche Rede sein, Hast ja gesessen im Gebet, In deinem Kämmerlein. Gunhilde, du mein heilig Kind, Was klagest du dich an? Willst du hier Kirchenbuße tun, Was fang ich Ärmste an? Sie führten sie ins Kämmerlein, Ob sies gleich nicht verstand; Der Engel, der ihr Stell vertrat, Alsbald vor ihr verschwand.

Gunhilde vivia tranquil·lament i pietosa al recés del seu convent fins que el seu confessor la seduí, fins que fugí amb ell. Ambdós viatjaren per tot el món, portant una vida de cràpules; el monjo practicava el joc i el frau, i finalment esdevingué un bandoler. Gunhilde, ai las, tu pobra dona, Gunhilde, què has esdevingut? Ella es troba sola en terra estrangera, el seu home penjat al patíbul. Amb els ulls vermells de tant plorar: ai las, què he fet! Vull tornar a casa i fer penitència i expiar els meus pecats. Ella anà mendicant per tot el país, acceptant almoines, fins que arribà al bosc prop del Rin, ben bé davant el convent. Trucà a la porta del convent fins que la porta s’obrí; entrà i restà davant l’abadessa i començà a plorar. Acolliu aquí l’infant pròdig, oh mare, que va fugir, deixeu que faci penitència segons les estrictes lleis de l’Església. Gunhilde, digues, què vols aquí? Deixa de dir tot això, tu has estat sempre pregant a la teva cel·la. Gunhilde, tu santa criatura, de què et planys? Si vols fer penitència aquí, què haig de fer, pobra de mi?
