Wenn einst der Tod an mein Lager tritt,
Drei Stücke gib in den Sarg mir mit:

Geraniumblüthe brennend roth,
Wie meine Lieb' war bis zum Tod;

Ein duftend Röslein auch leg' hin,
Wild wachsend wie mein freier Sinn;

Ein Lorbeerzweig lieg' auch dabei,
Ein Zweig nur, daß kein Kranz es sei!

Dann setz' an meinen Sarg dich hin,
Und weine, daß ich gestorben bin;

Und sprichst du dann: Wie der, wie der, 
So liebt mich Niemand auf Erden mehr!

Dann ist mein Tagewerk gethan,
Dann schwingt mein Geist sich himmelan!

Quan un dia la mort vingui al meu jaç,
encarrega tres coses per al meu taüt:

flors de gerani d’un vermell encès,
com ha estat la meva vida fins a la mort;

porta-hi també una flairosa petita rosa,
salvatge, com el meu esperit lliure;

i al costat, una branca de llorer,
una sola branca, perquè no sigui una corona!

Llavors, seu prop del meu taüt
i plora perquè m’he mort;

i aleshores diràs: com ell, com ell,
ningú m’ha estimat tant a la terra!

Llavors la meva tasca haurà finalitzat,
llavors el meu esperit s’enlairarà cap al cel!
