Aften paa Loggien
Language: Danish (Dansk)

Over hav og bjerg og flod
kom jeg hid fra norden;
ej hvad hjertet hist forlod,
finder det på jorden.
O, men her dog øjet ser,
hvad ved Codans strømme
aldrig uden vemod mer
sjælen sig kan drømme!
Underfuldt er her at stå;
saligt her at hvile:
I hver luftning engle små
vifte og hensmile.
Stille nat på fremmed tag!
Flamebjerg ved voven!
Velske nattergaleslag,
fra Lemoneskoven.
Nye himmel Nye jord!
Nye tryllestemmer!
Fryd, jeg drømte om i Nord!
Nu jeg dig fornemmer!

Evening on the loggia
Language: English  after the Danish (Dansk)
Over sea and mountain and river
I came hither from the North;
what the heart left up there
it will never find again on Earth.
Oh, but here the eye may yet behold
what, at the streams of Codan,
the soul can never again
dream about without sadness.
How marvellous to stand here;
how blissful to rest here!
In each breeze, tiny angels
wave and smile along.
Silent night on a foreign roof!
Mountain of flames at the sea!
Mediterranean nightingale warbles
from the lemon grove.
New sky, new Earth!
New magic voices!
Delight that I dreamed about in the North,
Now I sense you!
