  Dort drüben ruht noch letzter Glanz
Und hüllt in Gold die Wipfel,
Ja, letzter Glanz, dann dunkelt's ganz
Im Thal und um die Gipfel.
Noch einmal gib mir heiß die Hand,
Eh' ich in Thränen mich gewandt.

  Die Thräne, ja, die bleibt mir noch,
Wenn ich in aller Weite;
Du liebes Kind, dein denk' ich doch,
Und ist es auch im Leide.

How sadly they drift away in the woods!
My foot must tread unfamiliar roads.

  A last radiance still rests over yonder
And wraps the treetops in gold,
Yes, a last radiance, then it becomes completely dark
In the valley and around the mountaintops.
Give me your hand once more fervently,
Before I turn away in tears.

  Tears, yes, they remain to me yet
When I am in all the far distant places;
You dear child, I shall think of you in any case
And be it only in pain.
The red leaves may swirl away in the wind:
Good-bye, good-bye!
