Dein gedenk' ich, heiss verlangend,
Ferne Schweiz, mein Vaterland!
All mein Sinnen frommt mir nicht,
Denn trüb und bangend
Weil' ich an dem fernen Strand.

Dein gedenk' ich, wunderschöne,
Wilde, stolze Alpenwelt!
Und dann klingt es durch mein Herz
Wie Glockentöne,
Bis ein Tränlein heimlich fällt.

Euer denk' ich, Grabeshügel,
Kühl und reich an stillem Glück!
Was das Leben? Lug und Trug!
O hätt' ich Flügel!
In mein Tal flög ich zurück!

Fervently yearning, I think of you,
Distant Switzerland, my homeland!
All my ponderings do me no good,
For, dreary and anxious,
I dwell upon a distant shore.

I think of you, wondrously beautiful,
Wild, proud alpine world!
And then it rings through my heart
Like the sound of bells,
Until a little tear falls secretly.

I think of you, grave-mounds,
Cool and rich in quiet happiness!
What is life? Deception and deceit!
Oh, had I wings!
I would fly back to my valley!
