Det var engang i de fjærne Tider,
der lig et vemodslort Drømmeland
af Soldis løfter sig høit og vinker
saa duftblaat i Horizontens Rand, -

da Solen skinned hver Stund paa Dagen,
og Maanen lyste i Natten ned, —
det var engang i de fjærne Tider,
at hun var Dagen og Natten med.

Jeg husker Dagenes hvide Følge,
den [rene]1 Himmel og Byen selv
i Klynger spredt langs den blanke Flade
som døsed guldmat hver Sommerkvæld.

Jeg husker Nætternes lyse Hoitid,
naar [Sjælen krøgtes]2 i Graad og Bon, -
o, stolt Gulnare af Drømmelandet,
hvor var du sælsom og bleg og skjøn.

Om Sommerkvælden, naar Søen døsed,
og Byen sagtelig sovned hen,
naar Stjerner vaagned, og Sindet rakte
sig længselsygt mod min egen Ven, —

da var der stundom en vaarlys Kjole,
der streg forbi lig en skyløs Drøm, -
jeg stod tilbage, men gjennem Hjertet
jog varm og brusende Blodets Strøm.

Aa Gud, aa Gud! — Og jeg sprang, jeg
med hede Kinder og ydmygt Sind,
jeg flygted sanseløs ind i Skogen,
som stod og suste for Kvældens Vind.

Og ned jeg kasted mig vild af Smerte,
til over Skogbrynet Maanen steg,
et gyldent Fredstegn i Sommernatten,
som vaaged drømmende taus og bleg.

Da kom du til mig. Dit Aasyn sværmed
i hellig Sorg som den lyse Nat,
der speiled varsomt og ømt dit Billed,
dit Drømmebilled, der sluktes brat.

Da Sonne strahlte jed' Stund an Tage
Und Mond erhellte der Nächte Reich
Es war einmal in den fernen Zeiten,
Dass sie war Tag mir und Nacht zugleich.

Ich denk' an Tages erwählt' Gefolge,
Den reinen Himmel, die Stadt, den Hag, 
Die Häuser all längs der blanken Fläche,
Die glänzte gülden jed' Sommertag.

Ich denk' der Nächte in lichter Festzeit,
Da Seel' sich labte an Sorg und Pein.
O, stolz' Gulnare vom Traumeslande,
Wie warst du seltsam und bleich und fein!
