Im Thal und im Schatten krankt mancher zur Stund;
Dein Lachen geht mit, Du mein Gretel vom See!

Gretel
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon mountain meadows, upon silent heights,
The flowers, the wild ones, are so scented and beautiful.
One above all others is like blood and like snow.
You know whom I mean: Gretel from the lake!
In the valley and in the shadows many a person is ailing at the moment;
My darling upon the meadows is lively and healthy,
Laughingly she says: "May God greet you!" and with laughter: "Adieu!"
There’s not one so dear as Gretel from the lake!
She never gave a thought to tomorrow,
She knows nothing of worries. She works and she laughs.
At every turn and wherever I might go,
Your laughter goes with me, you, my Gretel from the lake!
