Versäumte Zeit
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Es war wohl just um diese Zeit!
Die Lärche stand im grünen Kleid
Und an den Birken brach die Fülle
Der Blättchen aus der braunen Hülle.

Ein erstes Lied, ein voller Klang
Von Sehnsucht zog den Wald entlang,
Der Athem weißer Anemonen
Umwallte still die Buchenkronen.

Confirmed with Anna Ritter, Gedichte, Neunte Auflage, Stuttgart und Berlin: J.G. Cotta'sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger, 1900, pages 38-39.

Lost time
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
It must have happened just about this time!
The larch stood in its green garb
And upon the birches burgeoned an abundance
Of leaves from their brown sheaths.

A first song, a full ringing
Of yearning passed along the forest,
The breath of white anemones
Wafted quietly about the crowns of the beeches.

All about everywhere a golden scent,
A blissful becoming in the air,
In the soil a secret blooming and sprouting,
A yearning growing and opening.

In us, too, it was springtime,
And our hearts opened themselves wide --
Half in rejoicing and half in trepidation --
To receive the message of spring.

And yet - we did not find the word!
Time and place held us in a state of unease,
The hour, the dream drew to a close,
You kissed my hands in parting.
