Ein Wanderbursch, mit dem Stab in der Hand, Kommt wieder heim aus dem fremden Land. Sein Haar ist bestäubt, sein Antlitz verbrannt, Von wem wird der Bursch' wohl zuerst erkannt? So tritt er ins Städtchen durchs alte Tor, Am Schlagbaum lehnt just der Zöllner davor. Der Zöllner, der war ihm ein lieber Freund, Oft hatte der Becher die Beiden vereint. Doch sieh -- Freund Zollmann erkennt ihn nicht, Zu sehr hat die Sonn' ihm verbrannt das Gesicht; Und weiter wandert nach kurzem Gruß Der Bursche, und schüttelt den Staub vom Fuß. Da schaut aus dem Fenster sein [Schätzel]1 fromm, "Du blühende Jungfrau, viel schönen Willkomm!" Doch sieh' -- auch das Mägdlein erkennt ihn nicht, [Die Sonn' hat zu sehr]2 ihm verbrannt das Gesicht. Und weiter geht er die Straße entlang, Ein Tränlein hängt ihm an der braunen Wang'. Da wankt von dem Kirchsteig sein Mütterchen her, "Gott grüß euch!" so spricht er, und sonst nicht mehr. Doch sieh'! das Mütterchen [schluchzet]3 voll Lust: ["Mein Sohn!" und sinkt]4 an des Burschen Brust. Wie sehr auch die Sonne sein Antlitz verbrannt, Das Mutteraug' hat ihn gleich erkannt.

Un giovane viandante, col bastone in mano, ritorna a casa da paesi lontani. Ha i capelli coperti di polvere, il viso abbronzato, da chi sarà riconosciuto prima il giovanotto? Così entra in città per la vecchia porta, al posto di guardia sta il doganiere. Il doganiere, che era un suo caro amico, spesso avevano bevuto insieme. Ma l'amico doganiere non lo riconosce, tanto il sole gli ha bruciato il viso. E se ne va, dopo un breve saluto, il giovanotto, e si scrolla la polvere dai piedi. Qui sta affacciata alla finestra la sua buona innamorata, "A te, fiorente fanciulla, il mio saluto!" Ma guarda, neanche la ragazza lo riconsoce, tanto il sole gli ha bruciato il viso. E va avanti, per la strada, con una lacrima sulla guancia bruna. Qui viene con passo incerto, davanti alla chiesa, la sua mammina, "Salute a voi!", lui dice, e niente più. Ma guarda, la mammina singhiozza piena di gioia: "Figlio mio!" e cade sul petto del giovanotto. Per quanto il sole glo abbia bruciato il viso, l'occhio della madre lo ha subito riconosciuto.
