Ich sah den Helikon in Wolkendunst,
Nur kaum berührt vom ersten Sonnenstrahle:
Schau! Jetzo stehen hoch mit einem Male
Die Gipfel dort in Morgenrötebrunst.

Hier unten spricht von keuscher Musen Gunst
Der heilge Quell im dunkelgrünen Tale;
Wer aber schöpft mit reiner Opferschale,
Wie einst, den echten Tau der alten Kunst?

Wie? soll ich endlich keinen Meister sehn?
Will keiner mehr den alten Lorbeer pflücken??
Da sah ich Iphigeniens Dichter stehn:

Er ist's, an dessen Blick sich diese Höhn
So zauberhaft, so sonnewarm erquicken.
Er geht, und frostig rauhe Lüfte wehn.

J'ai vu l'Hélicon dans la brume des nuages
À peine touché par les premiers rayons du soleil :
Voyez ! Maintenant  s'élèvent tout d'un coup
Les sommets là-bas, dans l'embrasement rouge du matin.

Ici, dans cette verte vallée  une sainte source 
Nous parle de la faveur de chastes muses ;
Mais qui, dans une coupe sacrificielle immaculée,
Y puise comme autrefois la pure rosée des arts anciens ?

Quoi ? ne pourrais-je jamais plus voir un maître ?
Plus personne ne cueillerait l'ancien laurier ?
Là, je vois se dresser le poète d'Iphigénie.

C'est lui à la vue duquel ces hauteurs,
Si charmantes, si baignées de soleil, viennent à la vie.
Qu'il parte et soufflent des vent durs et froids.
