Al denne sorte himmel
Language: Norwegian (Bokmål)
Our translations:  FRE
Al denne sorte himmel,
al denne sorte jord;
al denne mørkets mumlen
al denne stilheds havdyp;
alt dette graa, der famler,
alt dette sære, som sukker, --
herre min Gud, er det dette,
menneskene kalder liv?

Ene, med sløve øine
raver vi rundtom i mørket . . .
SOlen er slukt, og Jehovah
selv ligger død indi mørket.
Rundt om os glider der klamme
skygger med flaggermusvinger.
Rundt om os lyder der sagte
snigende spøgelsefjed.

Og hvis vi stundom føler,
at vore bævende fingre
rører en levende haand --
synker vi rædde tilbage,
knytter til slag vor næve,
hvisker med hæse stemmer:
«Hvem er du? Hvad er det, du vil?»

Ene, med sløve øine
raver vi videre rastløst,
indtil vi dødstrætte synker
under i dødens mulm.
Aa -- hvorfor gaar vi ei sammen
haand i haand gjennem mørket?
Aa -- hvorfor græder vi ikke
og hvorfor beder vi ikke
sammen i livets nat?

Ja, hvorfor beder vi ikke,
vi paa den sorte jord,
beder, at han maa komme
komme i straalende klæder,
komme med glorieglimmer,
komme hvid gjennem natten
med orgelbrusende fred?

Aa -- hvorfor vilde vi ikke
alle elendige sjæle
bøie vort aasyn til jorden
kysse hans kjortels sømme
hulke vor jammer ud!

Tout ce ciel noir
Language: French (Français)  after the Norwegian (Bokmål)
Tout ce ciel noir,
toute cette terre noire ;
tout ce murmure des ténèbres,
tout cet abîme de silence ;
tout ce gris qui tâtonne,
tout cet étrange qui soupire,
Seigneur mon Dieu, est-ce cela
que les hommes appellent la vie ?

Seuls, avec les yeux embrumés,
nous errons en vain dans l’obscurité ...
Le soleil s’est éteint, et Jéhovah
lui-même gît mort au cœur des ténèbres.
Autour de nous glissent des ombres moites
aux ailes de chauves-souris.
Autour de nous résonnent doucement
les pas furtifs des fantômes.

Et si parfois nous sentons
que nos doigts tremblants
touchent une main vivante,
nous reculons, effrayés,
serrons le poing, prêts à frapper,
et murmurons d’une voix rauque :
« Qui es-tu ? Que veux-tu ? »

Seuls, les yeux hagards,
nous errons encore, sans répit,
jusqu’à mourir de fatigue
dans les ténèbres de la mort.
Ah ! pourquoi ne marchons-nous pas ensemble,
main dans la main, à travers les ténèbres ?
Ah ! pourquoi ne pleurons-nous pas
et pourquoi ne prions-nous pas
ensemble dans la nuit de la vie ?

Oui, pourquoi ne prions-nous pas ?
Nous qui sommes sur cette terre noire,
prions pour qu’il vienne,
qu’il vienne en habits resplendissants,
qu’il vienne avec l’éclat de la gloire,
qu’il vienne, blanc, à travers la nuit,
avec la paix retentissante des orgues ?

Ah… pourquoi ne voudrions-nous pas,
nous, âmes misérables,
baisser le regard vers la terre,
embrasser les ourlets de sa robe,
en sanglotant pour exprimer notre détresse !
