Morgenfreude
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Ich bin erwacht! -- Im Rosenschimmer
  Strahlt mir der junge Frühlingstag.
Es treibt mich aus dem engen Zimmer,
  Mich ruft der Sehnsucht Glockenschlag.
Noch freut mich nicht der Sonne Prangen,
  Die glühend durch die Wolken bricht;
Für mich ist sie nicht aufgegangen,
  Denn meine Sonne ist es nicht.

Und durch die bunt lebend'ge Menge
  Der Straße fliegt der kühne Sinn.
Ich weiß nicht, daß ich im Gedränge,
  Weiß nur, daß ich dir näher bin,
Wie ich dann immer froh erschrecke,
  Wie sich das scheue Herz bewegt,
Wenn um die vielgeliebte Ecke
  Erwartungsvoll der Schritt mich trägt.

Dann häng' ich mit verklärten Blicken
  Am lieben Fenster unverwandt;
Ein stilles, heiliges Entzücken
  Führt mich in meiner Träume Land,
Bis ich's in schöner Wahrheit sehe,
  Bis sich der Traum in's Leben wagt,
Und Himmels Klarheit aus der Höhe
  Von deinen Augen niedertagt.

Morning joy
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I am awake! In a shimmer of roses
  The young spring day sparkles for me.
I am compelled to leave my narrow room,
  I am being called by the tolling bells of yearning.
The effulgence of the sun does not delight me yet,
  [The sun] that glowingly breaks through the clouds;
It has not risen for me,
  For it is not my sun.

And through the colourful, lively throng
  Upon the street my audacious spirit flies.
I do not notice that I am in the jostling crowd,
  I only know that I am nearer to you;
How I am then always joyfully startled,
  How my shy heart is moved,
When, with anticipation, my steps take me
  Around the much-loved corner.

Then, with transfigured glances, I stare
  Steadfastly at the dear window;
A quiet, holy rapture
  Leads me into the land of my dreams,
Until I see its beautiful reality,
  Until my dream dares to step into real life,
And heavenly brilliance dawns from
  On high from your eyes.
