  Wie hold und lieblich durch die Bäume 
Du lächelst, goldner Abendstrahl, 
Viel schöner doch sind meine Träume, 
Und sonniger viel tausendmal! 

  Wie hoch ihr flieget durch die Lüfte, 
Und froh herab, ihr Vögel, singt, 
Wie laut ihr grüßt die süßen Düfte, 
Noch frischer doch mein Lied erklingt! 

  Wie keck ihr strömet, grüne Wogen,
Und leis dann fließt am Ufer hin, 
Nie kommt so freudig ihr gezogen, 
So friedevoll, wie ich es bin!

Evening bliss

  However lovely and beautifully through the trees
You smile, golden beam of evening,
Much more beautiful, nevertheless, are my dreams,
And many thousands of times sunnier!

  However high ye birds fly through the air
And [however] joyfully downward you sing,
However loudly you greet the sweet scents,
My song, nevertheless, sounds forth more freshly!

  However audaciously ye rush by, green waves,
And then quietly flow along the riverbank,
Ye never come along so joyfully,
So peacefully, as I am [joyful and peaceful]!
