So zärtlich lächelnd steht sie da,
Belohnt sie meinen Morgengruß
Mit einem liebesvollen Kuß.
 
     Schön bist du, Bildchen, sprächest du nur!
Weit schöner ist doch die Natur:
Ich seh' die Kunst, ein- zwey- dreimal,
Und eile zum Original.

On the portrait of a beloved mother

  There she is, my dear Mama!
So tenderly smiling she is depicted there,
She rewards my morning greeting
With a loving kiss.

  Lovely you are, portrait, if you could only speak!
Much more beautiful is reality:
I see the work of art -- once, twice, three times --
And hurry off to the original.
