Was hat's für übergroße Noth
    Bei Mädchen fein, bei Mädchen traut?

Ein Vogel singt und lockt die Braut,
    Dem Fische wird das Netz gestellt, -
Ein Mädchen fein, ein Mädchen traut,
    Ein rasches Mädchen mir gefällt.

Dem Fische wird das Netz gestellt,
    Es sengt die Fliege sich am Licht,

  A song of extreme distress.

  A bird is singing and luring the bride --
What could there be of extreme distress
  Among dainty maidens, among sweet maidens?

A bird is singing and luring the bride,
  A net is set for the fish, --
A dainty maiden, a sweet maid,
 A brisk maiden delights me.

A net is set for the fish,
  The fly singes itself at the light,
A brisk maiden delights you,
  And you do not delight the maid.
