Holunder und Linden -- süße Düfte -- Jasmin,
Bald, bald kommt die Zeit, wo ich gestorben bin.
Von Wohlgerüchen trieft der laue Sommerwind,
Ich liege tief drunten unberauscht und blind.

Oder bin ich dann ein Ton auf himmlischen Saiten?
Trinke Sternentau? Atme ambrosische Lüfte?
Braus ich mit Adlers Kraft durch die Ewigkeiten,
Spottend irdischer Bande, irdischer Grüfte?

Weh mir! mich armen, zweifelnden Schmetterling,
Mich bannt der Erde blumenfarbiger Ring.
Umhaucht mich, ihr Linden, schwärmt über mich hin
Hier unten, tief drunten, Holunder, Jasmin.

Le tiède vent d'été déborde de senteurs capiteuses,
Je suis allongée là tout au fond, sans ivresse et aveugle.

Ou alors, serais-je une note d'une corde céleste ?
Pourrais-je boire la rosée des étoiles ?respirer des airs ambroisiens ?
Filer avec la puissance de l'aigle à travers l'éternité,
Me moquant des liens terrestres, des tombes terrestres ?

Malheur à moi ! Moi pauvre papillon incertain,
Moi, bannie du cercle aux couleurs de fleurs de la terre.
Soufflez sur moi, tilleuls, affluez vers moi,
Là, en-dessous, tout au fond, sureaux, jasmins.
