Von meines Hauses engen Wänden 
wird mir ein Töchterchen gehegt, 
das herzig und mit lieben Händen, 
mein einzig Kind, des Alten pflegt.

Das hat sich nun den Freund erlesen, 
grün Eppich, seinen trauten Stamm; 
ich selbst, wär' ich wie sie gewesen, 
hätt' ihn erwählt zum Bräutigam.

Da bringt mein Goldschmied mir die Ringe, 
die ich dem jungen Paar bestellt, 
und feiert mit mir guter Dinge, 
ein Hochzeitsgast, der mir gefällt.

Und als der Pfarrer nach der Weise 
die Ringe tauscht und Träne rollt, 
sagt mir der Goldschmied leise:
"Die Ringe sind aus deinem Gold."

Dalle modeste pareti della mia casa
mi è stata protetta una figliola,
che con amore e con mani gentili,
la mia unica figlia, si prende cura del vecchio.
 
Lei ora ha scelto l'amico,
bello come un melo verde, di stirpe fedele;
io stesso, fossi stato in lei,
l'avrei scelto come sposo.
 
Ed ecco il mio orefice che mi porta gli anelli
che io ho ordinato per la giovane coppia,
e festeggia con me la bella cosa,
gradito ospite alle nozze.
 
E quando il sacerdote secondo il rito
fa scambiare gli anelli e scorre la lacrima,
mi dice piano l'orefice:
"Gli anelli sono del tuo oro"
